Jaguars are the largest of South Americas big cats and has become a symbol of power, strength, and beauty. They were also once worshipped as a God, the jaguar's name comes from a native American word meaning “the killer that takes its prey in a single bound.” Jaguars' skill in hunting is partly due to their extremely strong jaws. Jaguars make a variety of sounds, including roaring, mewing, and grunting.
Unlike many other cats, Jaguars like water, they often swim, bathe and play in streams and pools. They also use rivers to hunt for fish, turtles, or caimans(small, alligatorlike animals). They also feed on larger animals such as deer, peccaries, capybaras, and tapirs. They sometimes will even climb trees to prepare an ambush, killing their prey with just one bite.
Female jaguars have litters of about 1 to 4 cubs, which are blind and helpless at birth. The mother stay with them and fiercly defends them against any animal that tries to get near them, that includes the father. The cubs live with their mother for two years or more and learn how to hunt.
