The Story

The Lord of the Rings is a high fantasy epic written by English philologist and University of Oxford professor J. R. R. Tolkien. It started as a sequel to the children's book "The Hobbit" and became more known throughout the world. It was written in stages between 1937 and 1949, much of it during World War II. The story was initially intended to be one book split into three sections. However, when Tolkien showed the first volume entitled The Lord of the Rings to his publisher, it was decided to publish the work as three separate volumes, each consisting of two books, over the course of a year from the 21st of July 1954 to October 1955, thus creating the now familiar Lord of the Rings trilogy.
